Hey. What’s up everybody? It’s Brian Dean, from Quick Sprout. In this video, I’m going to show you how you can get more exposure, traffic, and customers for your e-commerce site using social media.

The first step is to identify influencers in your niche who might be interested in what you’re selling or the content that you’re publishing on your e-commerce blog. The best way to do that is to use a tool called Followerwonk. Just head over to What you want to do is click Sign in with Twitter, and that’ll create your account and link Followerwonk to Twitter. Once you’ve done that, click on Search Twitter Bios; this is what you’ll see, which is basically a way to look at influential people on Twitter, which is basically people that are influential on the web.

What you want to do is enter a keyword that’s related to your niche. If you sold eco-friendly water bottles, you’d want to put something like ‘Green’ and click Do It. What you want to do is sort by social authority, because this shows you the people who have the most influential people following them. Obviously, there’s going to be some irrelevant results in the mix, but you also get things like Planet Earth, which is obviously very relevant to green energy and green living, and things like that. What you want to do is just look down the list and look at these people who may be good fits for you, follow them on Twitter, and then you’d want to build a relationship with those people, maybe send them a free product or ask them to look at a piece of content that you published on your blog. Basically, you can tap into these influencers on social media by sharing their stuff, and you can also find them very easily using Followerwonk.

The next step and another great way to find potential customers and people to share your stuff on social media is to head over to Twitter and use their search feature. What you want to do is … again, let’s say you sold those water bottles. You’d want to search something like ‘water bottles’ and just see what conversations are already happening online around the topic, and then chime in. You don’t want to be sales-y and you don’t want to say something like, “Here, buy our water bottles.” If you have a great piece of content about water bottles or a cool product that’s really unique, you’d want to maybe reply to some of these people. They would come to your site because you replied to them directly, as long as you’re not pushy or sales-y.

If you want to take this to another level and you really want to monitor conversations around your products that you sell on your e-commerce site, you can use a tool called Just head over to and create an account, either free or paid. Once you’ve done that, you can log in and see our Member’s Area. What you want to do is basically automate the Twitter search to see what people are saying on social media about the products that you sell on your e-commerce site. What you want to do is head over to your membership area, click on Create Alert, and then enter a keyword related to what you sell; let’s just say ‘water bottles’. By default, it’ll create the keyword as ‘water bottles’, and you can also add another keyword or limit it to certain social media networks that might be really important for your business. Click on Next Step. By default, Mention includes every source possible, including Facebook, Twitter, news, blogs, videos, forums, etc. If for some reason for the products that you sell on your e-commerce site, you don’t care about video and there’s no one that’s going to be discussing you or posting videos about what you sell, you can always easily turn that off and on. You can turn that off. Forums is the same story, you can turn it off. Click Create My Alert, and your alert will be created.

Another great way to get exposure and traffic to your e-commerce site using social media is to create videos that help your target audience and also feature your product. A great example of a company doing this is Luxy Hair; they’re an e-commerce site that sells hair extensions. When you go to YouTube and you put in just ‘Lux’, this is the first result. That’s how popular their videos are. When you put in ‘Lux’, which could be luxury or a lot of other words, theirs is the first result. It’s really no mystery why. When you look at one of their videos, ‘Running Late Hairstyles’, it has over 3 million views. When you look at this video, it’s a video that teaches women some very easy hairstyling tips that they can incorporate into their morning routine when they’re running late. Of course, it subtly mentions the product, which is exactly what you want to do. You want to find out what your target audience would want to see in a video. Create really valuable, high-quality content that integrates your product without coming off as sales-y. Once you’ve created your video and uploaded it to YouTube, you want to share on other social media sites like Facebook and Pinterest, so you can get the ball rolling and get up to a lot of views, which will help you get more traffic from YouTube itself.

Another platform that’s perfect for e-commerce sites is Pinterest, because you can upload pictures of your product so people can actually see the products that you’re selling on your e-commerce site. What you do is next time you have a product that you’ve just added to your e-commerce site, you want to log in to Pinterest, click the + button, and then you can add it from your website. You just go to your website, pin the image of your new product, and then you want to write a little description about your new product. This is just an easy way to show off your products without coming off as sales-y. Pinterest is very visual, so you have a cool-looking product. It’s a great way to get some exposure for your e-commerce brand.

Another way that you can tap into social media is to host contests and giveaways on platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Facebook is really, really good for giveaways because they have actual apps that you can integrate into your Facebook page to basically run the giveaways for you. I’m showing you Shopify’s Facebook page right now because they do a really great job of promoting their e-commerce platform on Facebook. For example, they have a giveaway right now, and you can get this necklace. They have 37 likes, and they just posted that. That’s not very common for e-commerce platforms to get that kind of exposure on social media. Also, they have now gift cards. This is just a new functionality that they’ve added and this is a great way to let your audience know. This is another way that you can tap into social media, just to let your existing customers know about new features that you have, rather than emailing them, which sometimes people get a bit bothered about. You can publish it on social media. The people who are your hardcore fans, who are most likely to care about a new product or service that you sell, will be happy to see that.

That’s all there is to promoting your e-commerce site on social media. As you can see, there’s many, many different ways you can take advantage of social media, whether it’s identifying influencers or getting the word out about your business by providing great content, or as you can see here, doing contests and giveaways. Thanks for watching this video. I’ll see you in the next one.
