Which Social Media Platforms Are Best Suited for Your Business?

With all the social media sites available today, which ones should you leverage? In an ideal world, you would use them all. As a small business, however, you don’t have enough time and money to do so.

With your limited resources, which social media platform would you pick?

If you think Facebook and YouTube are your best bets because they are most popular, think again. Just because a site is popular doesn’t mean it is a good fit for you business.

To help you decide which social media platform is best suited for your business, I’ve created an infographic that explains what social sites you should be leveraging based on real data.

If you had to guess which social site performs the best for Quick Sprout, which one would you choose?

If you chose Facebook or Twitter, you’re wrong. Quick Sprout’s audience is mainly people who own businesses, and my number one traffic source – as far as social media platforms are concerned – is actually LinkedIn. I generate my LinkedIn traffic through groups such as this one.

  1. I agree – we’re a magazine-style website helping mums to go freelance and start their own businesses, and we’ve had huge success with Twitter. Until organic search took over, it was our #1 source of traffic.

Facebook is just okay for us, and Pinterest performs quite poorly at the moment. For the return on time investment, Twitter most definitely is the best platform for our niche.

    • Hannah, thanks for the feedback and validation for my thoughts 🙂

    • Michael klasno :

HannaH, I checked out Talented Ladies Club nice job, what a great idea. I also looked in on your Pinterest pages (61 Boards, Yeiks!) Your website is very ‘image oriented” so I believe you could get much more benefit from Pinterest if you eliminated over half of those boards and concentrated on your strong suite. Create your own pins and spend less time pinning other peoples images unless they directly support your goal. You guys are the ultimate Gals site and pinterest should be a great tool and source of traffic.

      • Great pointers Neil! Hannah, I agree – you have a great mission, and with your mom-oriented focus, Pinterest could be a huge resource for you.

        Best of luck to you!!!

  2. Thanks a lot for another great post Neil.

    A couple of thoughts, though

    – You could’ve added a few more stats on conversion rates with each social network.

    – Is there any website where I can dig through more of these stats?

Again, thanks. You give us so much value in every new post.

    Cheers

    • Jawad, there are enterprise level solutions. However, I find that looking through analytics is sufficient in most cases.

  3. Nice infographic. Most people immediately think they must be using Facebook and Twitter without even considering that alternatives might be better suited.

  4. Thanks for the great info, one of the effective way of getting it really comes in handy.

    Cheers !

  5. I guest blog on several women’s websites as well as my two sites. The most interaction and sharing occurs on Twitter. Thanks for another informative infographic and sharing the embed code:)

  6. Nikhil Ganotra :

    Great Write Up Neil!

    Truly worth reading 🙂

  7. Nishant Bazzad :

Thanks Neil Patel for this awesome article. It’s always difficult to find the perfect one. I think everyone should use all of the above social media platforms and give importance that suits them.

  8. Nice post! Well explained about which type of websites should use which social media. Doesn’t Pinterest stand anywhere in promoting a website?

  9. This is a great post Neil. The research you performed for this post was very helpful in providing some direction for my social media marketing. Thank you very much and keep up the great work!

  10. Excellent post!

This tells me a key factor in choosing the preferred media is directly linked to buyer persona and not just type of business. If my business is trying to reach female more than male; younger more than older; or admin more than entrepreneurial…will affect/determine which platform.

If so, and if you have a business with a broad reach, should we have more than one persona to broaden our audience and match the various personas to the relative social media?

    • Murray, I think you should really research each channel and see which types of content drive the most traffic and go from there. Often times if you have multiple verticals you’ll need personas to match them.

  11. I think Google + is more important for my business as I have seen this as a ranking factor for my business.

  12. Neil or should i call you Nail, (u seem to hit it right every time on its head!!)

crisp and informative infographic. will validate it with some of my clients and revert.

  13. Hey guys,

You did it again! I think you nailed it with the infographic. I’m always wondering if I should focus on which platform and I am much ‘clearer’ now.

A huge thank you for sharing this and appreciate it guys!

  14. Priscilla (Book Blogger) :

This has got to be my favourite infographic! I guess I should focus more on LinkedIn and Twitter then 😀

  15. That’s Amazing Post Neil, Personally I Think Twitter is the Best Social Media Platform engage with users.

  16. I’m going to have to look at the Infograph again and make some notes, Neil.

So glad LinkedIn got a well-deserved mention. I find people engage more on that platform. Perhaps because it is seen as a serious networking platform?

  17. Right Michael, I realize that I’m not going to be able to build a Facebook fan page that people will like as an investigator that deals with infidelity, child custody and asset search type investigations. But that doesn’t mean that Facebook ads targeted geographically towards married people wouldn’t work. And I was just wondering if there were other ways or suggestions of how to try and utilize the power of social media with such a socially discreet issue. Laugh all you want, but I just saved 15% or more by switching to Geico . . .

  18. Mustafa Gaziani :

    Hi Neil,

Amazing infographic. Mostly I use facebook or Google+ to promote business and I think these are best practice if we done on all above social platforms.

Twitter is one of the best place to get valuable customers or to promote business.

Thanks for sharing an amazing article.

  19. Hello Neil,

Another nice post I have found on your blog. I market my blog on Facebook and Twitter and Google+, sometime on Linkedin. Maximum visitors of my blog are coming from Facebook. I do not much concentrate on Linkedin. Thanks for sharing this nice post.

  20. Thank you for this infographic, Neil. I have a product base business that targets mostly women but I have never thought about using Pinterest. Maybe I should try it out. Currently I’m focusing on Instagram with a little bit of Facebook. You’re right about the coupons and contest on Facebook. Thanks again Neil.
