The Definitive Guide to Landing Page Optimization

landing page optimization

Have you ever created a landing page? If so, have you ever modified or optimized it? If not, you’re leaving a lot of money on the table.

Before we get into how you can optimize your landing page, however, let’s go over why you should create one in the first place. The main reason is that all traffic sources are not equal. In order to boost your conversion rate from different traffic sources, you need to create different web pages that are targeted to those different types of audiences.

To help you with your landing page initiatives, I’ve created a 30,000-word guide that will teach you everything you need to know about landing page optimization.

Here’s what you will learn from The Definitive Guide to Landing Page Optimization:

  • Chapter 1: How landing pages fit within your marketing arsenal – this chapter will teach you the purpose of landing pages and when to use them.
  • Chapter 2: How to read your audience’s mind – understanding the thought process of your visitors is important. If you know what they are thinking, you will be able to convert more of them. That’s what you’ll learn in this chapter.
  • Chapter 3: Optimizing traffic for higher conversions – a landing page without visitors is useless. You’ll not only learn how to drive traffic to your landing page, but you will also learn how to drive “qualified” traffic.
  • Chapter 4: What makes a visitor convert – there is an art and science portion to conversion optimization. You’ll learn the common mistakes to avoid to make sure you can convert visitors into customers.
  • Chapter 5: Putting your skills to the test – A lot of guides that talk about testing tell you what you should be testing, but they don’t teach you the why or how part. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know about testing.
  • Chapter 6: Read, review, react – some tests will go really well, and others will not. Based on the results, the actions you need to take will vary. We’ll walk you through all of the major scenarios you need to be familiar with, and we’ll give you solutions to each of those situations.
  • Chapter 7: Tools of the trade – landing page optimization doesn’t have to be hard or even complicated. With the use of the tools in this section, landing page optimization will be a breeze for you.

  1. Yet another amazing guide Neil. How are you churning all of these amazing resources out so quickly?

  2. Very detailed, and I like how you included lots of examples here, Neil.

You mention it in your tools section, but I’d also vouch for Instapage — they have a great user experience plus it’s free to get started there. Their UI is very intuitive.

Last, I’m sure you address this in your guide, but it’s important to distinguish between free offer landing pages and purchase landing pages. Based on the goal, this should affect the initial decision on the tone of the sales copy and the length of the page. Plus, when it comes to optimizing that initial choice, I’ve found some research that shows that some “common sense” optimization choices (e.g. making your call to action buttons bigger … or using more press logos for credibility ) can actually hurt conversions. Something to consider.

    Keep up the good work.

  3. Cool tips Neil you nailed it as always!

I will add your tips to my blog post about Newsletter landing pages: http://marketerscoffeetime.kakushinwebinars.com/2013/11/how-to-create-newsletter-landing-page.html

  7. Alejandra Ruani :

    Amazing, Neil.

The conversion rate in our various websites and landing pages has tripled since we use Crazy Egg – and can’t wait to read this guide and share it with my team.

You always help us to become “Kind of a Big Deal” too!!!

Collectively, if we were to collect everyone’s data on improvements exclusively based on your guides and Crazy Egg, we’d blow up the charts (!) If you ever decide to run a survey for that, we’d complete it in a heartbeat – I feel that we need to give you something back for your continuous help and generosity.

    Thank you!!!

    Alejandra

  8. Gonzalo Armendariz :

Wow, super excited to read this tonight after work. I’ve taken a lot of your advice, Neil. I have to admit, you have become my mentor. Probably my biggest mentor currently. If you could imagine for a second, someone standing on a huge boulder with people beneath, looking up as I preach your words of awesomeness. LOL. That’s how I feel as of late. Like I’m giving sermons. But seriously, I find myself channeling your techniques and ideologies to my staff. Part of the training process for new employees is to read a few of your guides and subscribe to your QuickSprout blog newsletter. So if you must know, you’ve got a seriously, borderline ridiculous brand ambassador in this guy <— Thanks for everything man!

    • Gonzalo, thanks for the kind words of support.
Glad I could help. Please let me know if there is anything else I can assist with 🙂

  26. Thank you Neil for another guide that goes to my bookmark folder “Best from Neil Patel”.

The first thing I did is I went to Tools of the trade chapter (https://www.quicksprout.com/landing-page-optimization-chapter-7/) and have found some interesting tools I have not heard of before.

I think I will pay special attention to them.

  27. Vasile Mironeasa :

    Thank you Mister Neil !

You are great , I appreciate your effort .

    My respect to you !

  28. Hi Neil,

This is another awesome guide. In the future, could you create a guide which teach how to create this type of guide?

    Thanks!
    Rubel

  29. You read my mind. This was on my to do list! to learn landing pages. Thank you!!

  30. Thanks Neil.

I redesigned my website http://www.azizulyusof.com to follow as much as landing page practice (for conversion) as i can, while trying to optimize it for Search Engine.

While i still learning those two areas (so you can expect some weakness), this newly redesigned website is kind of experimental to see whether a landing page can be optimized for both (Conversion Rate and SEO).

It also using Multivariate Testing (MVT) to find the best version.

    Any feedback Guys?

    Azizul

    • Yep, just keep running a/b tests. No need to do a MVT test, focus on A/B as it will be simpler and tends to be more accurate.

  31. Hi Neil,

I have been reading you blog continuously for last 2-3 weeks.
I am working hard on my website SEO and I think this is the best blog I came across of all the times. I do use moz paid tools and read moz too but I think this blog is the best 🙂

I am even planning to subscribe to your university. I have read Video Transcript of your few videos( especially Link Building), and they are very helpful!

    Keep posting! 🙂

    Thanks,
    Chetena

    • Chetena, looking forward to having you be part of it all. Please let me know if you have any questions about anything 🙂

  32. Antonis Adamakos :

Once again, a big thank you Neil!! I am looking forward to read this guide.

  33. Well again a great resource for optmizing landing page. As per my words in order to create a good landing page there are a few basic elements that need to be in play. This isn’t by any means an exhaustive list; however, missing any of these components will undoubtedly cause your landing page to suffer.

    1 Strong Headline
    2 Topically Focused Content
    3 Benefit-Oriented Content
    4 Scannable Content
    5 Visual Clarity
    6 Call-to-Action
    7 Testing

  34. Done. Thanks again for this wonderful guide!

  35. Thanks Neil.

  36. Excellent stuff again, thank you! Trying to get the conversion rate up is always on our minds, so having an appealing, fast site is what we always aim for.

  37. Another amazing book, kudos.

  38. Neil,

Very informative guide. Thank you. You had mentioned that the landing page shouldn’t be a “name squeeze page” offering a free resource in exchange for name and email yet you showed ‘The Green Guide as an example of this practice. Am I missing something?

  39. Neil – seriously, how do you find the time? I was just reading a great article at ProBlogger about bloggers feeling overwhelmed, and it is motivating that, with all the projects you have going on, you are consistent about posting on QuickSprout. And then on top of it all, you provide these amazing, in-depth guides. Thanks for everything.

  40. Hey Neil,

Thanks for yet another resource. I went through your link building guide and am currently building a campaign for my site. That is an amazing resource. Can’t wait to read this one too!
