7 Lessons I Learned From My Very First Customer

first customer

When I was sixteen, I decided I wanted to graduate from college in two years instead of the normal four years. To accomplish my goal, I started to take general education classes that most colleges require while I was in high school.

The first class I took was Speech 101. In that class, I had to give three public speeches… one of them was “How search engines work”. Luckily for me, while I was giving that speech, a gentleman by the name of Steve who worked at Elpac Electronics was in the class, listening to my speech. After the class, he told me that his company was trying to figure out a way to get more traffic from search engines.

To make a long story short, Steve introduced me to a consultant by the name of Andy Mindlin who was running all of the marketing for Elpac. Andy gave me a shot and paid me $1,500 to come into the company for two days and teach them about SEO.

How to Convert Blog Readers Into Customers

convert blog readers

Creating a popular blog isn’t hard. If you follow this guide, you’ll be covered on the content end. The rest just involves social media promotions. The hardest part about blogging is generating a positive ROI from it.

Over the last seven years, I’ve created four blogs: Pronet Advertising (I don’t own this blog anymore), Quick Sprout, KISSmetrics, and Crazy Egg. Each of those blogs not only exceeds 100,000 monthly visitors, but, more importantly, they drive customers to each of my businesses.

What I’ve learned the hard way is that monetizing blogs is much more difficult than building traffic, but I feel that I now have a formula that works well. Here is the formula I use to monetize my blogs:  [click to continue…]

The Science of Instagram: How to Get More Followers and Likes

I never really used Instagram, but once I learned that it has over 100 million users, I had no choice but to start using it.

“Why?” you may ask.

Well, not only can you leverage it to promote your personal brand, but you can use it to promote your business as well.

When I first started using it, within the first few days my account climbed to one hundred followers, but then it slowly stopped growing. I was still gaining a few followers a day, but it wasn’t significant enough to gain any traction as my one hundred followers resulted in no more than thirteen likes on any one of my images.

So, over the weekend I started learning everything about Instagram: what causes users to like images, what causes them to follow others, and how you can get more people to find your images.

I then applied what I learned to my account. Now, I am consistently gaining over two hundred followers a day, and my images can easily get well over a hundred likes. Best of all, I am able to achieve these results by only following 5 people (I know, I need to start following more people).

Organize your Instagram content in one place across all the document apps you use.

Are You Losing Influence Online? Here’s How to Turn Things Around

brand losing

One of the things that I truly love about blogging and social media in general is the ability to create great content, build an audience and become an authority.

There is a certain pride that comes along with all that hard work…and the recognition that follows when your ship finally comes in.

Now, I don’t desire to become an authority so I can lord it over a bunch of people. I like being an authority because I like to teach people how to succeed at things like SEO, web analytics and entrepreneurship.

That’s what truly makes influence so attractive.

But even after all that hard work, you can still lose influence. Things happen in the business world that negatively impacts it.

For instance, you get so busy, you can’t maintain your blog; someone takes a shot at you and writes an inflammatory post; or everyone is running away from you to some rising star.

We’ve all felt it…those times when you are not as popular as you once were – the times when you are not the “go-to” guy or girl anymore.

Naturally, you want to change that because losing influence equals losing clients, jobs and money. So, what do you do when that happens?

Let me show you:  [click to continue…]

What Spending $66,372.09 On Paid Advertising Taught Me

scotch magic ad

About three months ago, I launched a landing page on my personal site, I never really completed the landing page as I got a bit lazy and didn’t finish the case studies on it.

Nonetheless, it does all right. It converts at 3.7 percent, which means 37 out of 1,000 people fill out the lead form. I also tested a shorter version of the page. Conversions went above the 5% mark, but the quality of the leads decreased drastically. For this reason, I went back to a long sales letter format.

The way I currently drive traffic to that landing page is from Quick Sprout. From the Hellobar at the top to the “consulting” link in the top navigation to the two banner ads in the sidebar, I’ve been able to drive at least 6,000 visitors a month to just from Quick Sprout.

Because I wasn’t satisfied with the volume of traffic I was getting on, I decided to test a few different advertising sources: LinkedIn, Google AdWords, Retargeter, Perfect Audience, and StumbleUpon Ads. Here is what I learned:  [click to continue…]
