quick sprout answers

When I first launched Quick Sprout in April of 2007, my goal was to create a community that was so engaged that it would cause each blog post to get at least 20 comments. At first I thought this was a lofty goal that would never be achieved… boy you proved me wrong.

The very first blog post received 28 comments and if you flash forward to today, the most active one has received 646 comments. [click to continue…]

The 7 Harsh Realities of SEO

by Neil Patel on February 15, 2010

Do you want to optimize your website for search engines? Search engine optimization (SEO) isn’t rocket science, but there are a lot of little things you need to know about it before you start trying to increase your search engine traffic.

Harsh Reality #1: Links are everything

There are two major aspects of SEO. The first is on-page optimization and the second is the number of sites linking to you. On-page optimization is something that every one can easily manipulate, but links on the other hand aren’t.

Search engines look at:

  • The number of sites linking to yours – typically the more sites linking to your website, the better.
  • The anchor text of these links – if you are trying to get ranked for “dog food” it’s more advantageous if the link that points to your website says “dog food” instead of your website name.
  • How relevant are your links – if your website is about dog food then you want either dog or pet related sites to link to you.

The three things I mentioned above make up an ideal link and because it’s hard to get ideal links, search engines place more emphasis on them than anything else. [click to continue…]

Why I’ll never live in a rich neighborhood…

by Neil Patel on February 12, 2010

mansion

Don’t you want to make millions of dollars so you can buy that dream house of yours? You know, the one that over looks the water and is in a neighborhood filled with other expensive homes.

I used to have that dream, but I recently realized that it just wasn’t for me. Here’s why…

My trip back home

A few weeks ago I went back home to Orange Country, California to spend a few days with my folks and to attend a conference in Los Angeles. I know, you’re probably thinking that Orange County (O.C.) is a ritzy area, but by no means is the majority of O.C. like that.

For example, my parent’s home just looks like an average home and it isn’t worth anywhere near a million dollars. Now this doesn’t mean that my parents live in a bad area, instead they just live in a middle class neighborhood. The schools are pretty good and the fanciest restaurant is the Olive Garden, which frankly isn’t too bad.

As usual, when I visit O.C. I spend time with my folks and I also setup a lot of business meetings. Because I was also attending a conference in LA, I setup the majority of my meetings in Bel Air, which was close to the conference center. [click to continue…]

Here’s the Biggest Mistake You’re Going to Make…

by Neil Patel on January 26, 2010

big mistake

Everyday, I am constantly seeing entrepreneurs make one big mistake. It isn’t that you spend too much money or that you’re stuck in a bubble and refuse to get out of your comfort zone. It’s that you can’t focus all of your energy on one business!

I don’t want to hear bullshit excuses coming out of your mouth. Your new business doesn’t tie in with your existing one! You can’t try out a few business ideas before you pick the best option!

If you don’t focus on one business you’re bound to fail. Hypothetically, even if all of your ideas are revolutionary and they are bound to do well in this world, you’ll make them crash and burn. Why? Well, it’s because if you’re splitting your time between a few businesses, you won’t be able to put in the required amount of time and energy into any of them. [click to continue…]
