Who wants to join another social network, right? Don’t get me wrong, I think there are too many social sites out there, but Google Plus is different. I am not saying it is better or worse than Facebook or any other social site out there, what I am saying is that it is starting to become really popular. And whether you like it or not, it’s going to become a new channel for you to promote your business.
Although there currently isn’t a Google Plus profile for businesses, that doesn’t mean it can’t benefit your business. Here is how you can leverage Google Plus to benefit your business:
Step #1: Sign up
If you have a Google Plus profile, you are already off to a great start. If you don’t, go here and sign up. As a heads up, there are two things that are required before you can signup:
- Gmail address – if you don’t have a Gmail address, you won’t be able to use Google Plus.
- Invitation – if you haven’t been invited, you won’t be able to use it yet. If this is the case, just leave your Gmail address below in the comments and I’ll invite you to it so you don’t have to wait.
Step #2: Create your profile
Just because your profile is supposed to be about you, that doesn’t mean you can’t also use it to promote your business. Here is how I would go about creating an effective Google Plus profile:
- Upload a picture – I don’t care if you are the hottest person or ugliest person out there, you have to upload a picture of yourself. Ideally, one that may include you wearing a t-shirt with a company logo or something related to your business.
- Fill out your profile – when you’re first getting started, you may feel overwhelmed with the amount of information that Google Plus asks for, but it’s not bad. Fill in everything including links to your company, what you do, all of the places you lived, your education, and even your contact information.
- Videos – if you have any speeches you have given that were recorded or interviewed, feel free to add them to the video section. It will help give you more credibility and it will give your business some extra attention.
Step #3: Add friends
The trick with having a popular social profile is to have a ton of friends. There are two main camps when it comes to adding friends… the first is to only add people you know, and the second is to add anyone.
I personally prefer the second one and although you may consider it spamming, I’ve actually closed a few business deals from random people that I have added as a friend on social sites like Facebook and Twitter.
Ideally, what you want to do is add everyone in your address book–as those are people you probably know. Once you do that I would search for people that you feel would be interested in getting to know you or your business. If you do this for a few weeks you should easily be able to get to over 1000 people who will befriend you.
Step #4: Join the conversation
When your friends post stuff on Google Plus, you should be checking out what they have to say. Granted, at this point you probably are following too many people where you won’t be able to keep track of every conversation, but you should be able to keep track of a few.
If you like a conversation make sure you “plus it”, comment, or share it with your friends. By doing this more people on Google Plus will get to know you. And if you ever share something with people that aren’t on Google Plus yet, it will email them every time you have something to share.
Step #5: Create conversations
Joining the conversation isn’t enough. You also need to create conversations. One way I do this is by posting on my own profile so that all of my friends can see what I am thinking.
Some of the things you may want to post are status updates, quotes from famous people, things related to your business, and just random things from your daily life. If you can post something on your profile on a daily basis you should be able to get a good amount of your friends engaged on your profile.
At the same time you need to monitor which of your friends are engaging your profile so you can reciprocate and engage on theirs every once in a while.
Step #6: Promote, promote, and promote
Now that you have an engaged audience, you can now promote your business. There are two main ways you can do this:
The first is to make posts on Google Plus and link to your business or website. By doing so you’ll start to get more people more familiar with your business and what you do. If your business has a blog this can be very effective. For example Google Plus is now a top 10 referrer to TechCrunch.
The second way to promote your business through Google Plus is by adding a Google Plus Button to your website. The more people that click the “Plus Button” the more traffic you’ll get from the social site. In addition to that the more people that click on the button, the more traffic you’ll get from the Google search engine. Google has actually added Google Plus stats in your Webmaster Tools account so you can see how the button is actually affecting your search engine traffic in a positive way.
Conclusion
It doesn’t matter if you think Google Plus is a hit or miss, it is an effective tool to use to promote your business.
Hopefully this blog post has convinced you to join Google Plus and use it. In the long run I think it will be a large part of Google’s algorithm when it comes to determining how high your website rankings on their search engine.
As I mentioned earlier, if you don’t have a Google Plus invite, just leave a comment with your Gmail email address and I will invite you.
PS: If you want to add me as a friend on Google Plus, click here.

This amazing course will teach you, step by step, how to double if not triple your traffic over the next 30 days.

Nice article, helpful to beginners, if you could invite me please i would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Glad you found the article helpful
I admit, I was going to ignore it. But you’ve got me thinking differently about it so I’ll give it as much of a shot as I gave FB and Twitter. Just added you
Awesome, thanks!
That’s so funny Ruben because I almost did the same thing. I am visiting Canada again and when I am here I go and take time to catch up on some reading (usually Neil’s blog and two others), but wasn’t ecstatic about this one like I usually am… because well, it’s another social network… problem is, it’s a big one and one that I should pay attention to… Got me thinkin different too. I think +1 being a top ten referrer to TechCrunch was a ah ha moment.
You have to take every opportunity that appears and you can’t ignore something new that has a lot of potential to promote your business.
I’m actually surprised at how many people jumped on to google plus. I’m holding off until I see it go big time mainstream like facebook or twitter. There are way tooo many social sites out there…
Do you really think we need another one? Meh
I don’t think it hurts at all. Google is king when it come to search and information, so it’s a new breed of social network. social search network
I am tired of the monarchy Google need to step down and focus on what they have.
Google is able to be on top of everything and I assume that being on Google Plus will have a bigger impact on your ranking than being on Facebook
Ok. You win. I’ll use Google+… Your post pushed me over the edge! All I need is an invite…
Thank you!

Joining and creating conversations with G+ may indeed, be important.
I would add that managing those relationships is just as important, Circles being a good step towards that direction.
Adding Plus buttons may be important, but I disagree that the “Promote, Promote, Promote” method is what will make the most significant impact for a business.
Managing the relationships you create on G+, and other sites is far more valuable that blasting self promotion through, yet another hose.
Asking what the people in your circle need to grow/run their business, and generating your own (ahem) buzz with word of mouth referrals will move the needle far greater.
I agree, great points. G+ is still in it’s infancy, much work needs to be done!
please invite me to google plus! paul@gydos.com
Done, Paul!
I’ve really enjoyed Google+ Neil and now I am enjoying your writing about Internet Entreprenurship. You introduced me to Google+ and I follow you in one of my circles. I would really like to share with you on this platform and would be very honored if you would put me in one of your circles. Thanks Neil!
Sorry Neil but I’m on the camp of not adding everyone. If I am interested by users who follow me, I usually add them to a separate circle (remember that circles are visible to you only). Else I just prefer them as friends, work, leads and those I follow.
To each their own. I like sharing insights and thoughts which is my primary motivation for adding my readers (whom I consider colleagues and friends
)
Thanks for sharing Neil!
No Problem, thanks for reading
Sure, Google+ is different I was also looking for an invitation but finally a day I was able to sign in with my existing email address.

This is really exciting. I haven’t seen a lot of articles that lay out the benefits of Google Plus as well as you have. At LookupPage (http://www.lookuppage.com), we use social media for reputation management. Google Plus can be an excellent way for companies and brands to improve their online reputations — especially if the content is added to search engines. Thanks for the tips!
Not a problem, glad you found it useful.

I like Google + the most. If +1 works, it will not only improve search quality, but also make ads more engaging. This may potentially improve Google’s ads, and eventually may turn into a core social product that can expand in new directions
Great points. I think it will definitely do everything you stated!
Thanks, Neil. I’ll give it a try and look forward to your invitation.

Hey Neil, your article was really informative. However, the points that you mentioned for people to create a business profile on the Google+ are similar to the business profile (or rather fanpage) on Facebook.
Every social media site where you wish to promote yourself needs your true identity and at the same time intensive interaction with your peers and the “befriends”….
However, thank you Neil on elaborating on the social media interaction forms…!
Great points, I think it is achievable if you work at it!
Yes Of course….its just that all of this needs a long time to practice, gathering the right audience to your profile and then the right content to publish. Also, I guess the major point after making up the mark on Social media is to keep updating frequently.
Neil,
Thanks for your article again.
I have left my Gmail id here. Please invite so that I can use GGL+.
Thanks in advance

Your blog has given me a sense of some of the challenges of running a business and some useful tips in meeting those challenges. Thank you!
Awesome thanks, really appreciate the kind words. Your invite is sent
Thank for the invite 2richants@gmail.com.. Great blog which has a nice balance between general business and online business which is becoming very blurred these days but most blogs are one or the other… I also like your business principles ie work hard, be committed, dont expect sucess overnight and learn from your mistakes..
Thanks Richard!

Great writeup Neil, just wanted to point out that people probably shouldn’t post their email in the comment field, because it will almost assuredly get eaten up by spam-bots.

Why is Google so glitchy? I took your advice…set up a gmail acct to use Google Plus and they text me a code for finishing gmail set up thaty won’t verify! Now I’ve got a gmail user name reserved that I probably won’t be able to use! Is that crazy or what?
Might be a problem specific to your account. I would contact google

Neil,
Thanks for the continual stream of useful information. You have been a good source for our new venture. Thank you for sending a Google+ invite.
Not a problem, glad we are connected
!
This is yet just one more thing I wish I didn’t have to buy into. While I understand it can help me and it is Google based so i should want to pay attention. But seriously, why can’t google stick to what they are good at, search engines. Why is there this need to have domination over the net. It is big enough to support many different business’s so why must Google be infatuated with ruling it. It is almost like world domination. If you have one super power ruling the area you will become stale and stagnant because there is too much government and politics involved. the internet has been able to flourish because of it’s diversity, Google isn’t Hitler and should stop trying to dominate as such. I am not trying to say Google is Hitler but seriously know when to quit. There no need to dominate everything.
maybe i am just jaded but, enough is enough. Stick to search Google! Plus those people who are in the know………get stalked by google. Do you really want to lay all your eggs in one basket to be reversed engineered.
I guess we’ll see how this will pan out. So far, so good!
yes you are right Neil, Gplus is one of the bets place for business promotion because Gplus make easy to contact with high profile peoples easily and with hangout feature it is now more easy to get trust
Definitely, great points Snap!
so, when you will come online to hangout
Please invite me Thank you
sydneygeorge802@gmail.com
Done, Sydney!
Great article- I appreciated the tips & I would love an invite! Please & Thanks, Connie
Awesome not a problem. What’s your email connie?
Neil, you really should put a big caveat in your article because right now G+ is NOT allowing people to create business pages and those who do, have them deleted.
Though I suspect this will change in the near future as Google pushes G+ forward to meet the demands of their users and shareholders demand for increasing profits.
Also of very important note, if you violate their terms of agreement and service – whether accidentally or on purpose, Google will not only delete your G+ account, but will also ban you from using all Google related products and services like gmail.
Imagine losing all of your friends, family and business associates emails…
As a marketer, the last thing I want is to get banned from using PPC with Google because of an accident or misunderstanding since they’re a little too quick to jump to conclusions and ban people for perceived infractions.
Dealing with G’s customer service is a complete nightmare and one in which I try to avoid at all costs.
Thanks for the heads up. However, I am not adding people as business contacts they are part of my personal network. I understand that G+ is not operable for businesses at this point. However, I feel once it is up and running people can have an idea of how they can use G+ for business. Thanks!
I have really wanted to start using it, I would really appreciate the invite, thanks !!!
What’s your email? I’ll invite you!
If you can send me an invite that would be great!
Thanks Neil,
Mark

redflagminor@gmail.com
Hi Neil,
Fabulous post. I’ve added you to my groups and I think I’m on your group. Fabulous.
One point: I was able to join without a google address. I joined google years ago with my aol address to get some blogger blogs. And I was able (I think) to join with that. I may be wrong and I’m not really using it right, but it seems like I’m in. (And I don’t want a google account because someone already has my name@google.com. And I don’t want my name with 18 numbers after it!)
Anyway, thank you very much for this post. I look forward to more posts telling me how to use it better.
Beryl
Glad you enjoyed the post! Thanks Beryl.
Thanks for all the awesome information. Please send me an invite.
Regards
Will do. What is your email Harjit?

Hey Neil,

I don’t understand what you saying? If you want an invite let me know
Hey there, can you please invite me.

Thanks Neil, this is very helpful for beginners. Google plus is super brand new to me, I’ve heard that it’s quite similar to facebook but it’s moving faster in circulation. I bet it’s user friendly just like how Google is a very useful search engine. This will help businesses specially as a promotional tool. Thanks again!
Glad I could help, thanks!
At beta version, Gplus already hits 18million users man, don’t know way but gplus on top right know although there is no entertainment stuff too, except sharing sharing and sharing…
Great points. They are really growing fast!
G+ is more like a drink… it’s just a beginning like u remove the head…let some time go and you will see how people get irritated from it

Great work! Can you send me an invite. My email-id: priya11dvg@gmail.com.
Surely, thanks Priya!
My goodness you get a lot of comments! (You’ll probably never get to mine…) Anyway, I have a question regarding followers on social network sites: is it okay to follow, or to be followed by competitors? I would think it is totally okay. But then I’m not that “savvy” when it comes to how to do internet marketing. What are your thoughts on this?
It’s definitely okay to follow your competitors. Chances are they are already snooping on you, why not follow them and have instant information. Also, in the online marketplace there are few real “competitors” See if you can work together to achieve goals. Affiliates are great.
Neil –

Time will tell, I would say utilize it to understand the functionality right now.

Very clear, very simple.
Just the way it should be
Hey Neil – I am on Google+ because people in my blogging circle invited me. I love your article, but I find it really curious that you talk about first getting on and then adding people. How is that good for helping business any more than any of the other ways we are already connected to those people that we’re adding?
There is a lot I could say about social networking, but I think it boils down to that I don’t see how adding Google+ to the social networking repertoire is necessary other than trying to cover all of the bases. It just seems like people are doing it so that don’t miss out. Yet, I’ve found that so far, everyone on Google+ is a pusher (aka content marketer). It seems like general consumers aren’t even there yet. Most of my friends and family never talk about it. And I’m not just saying that because I’m a skeptic. It’s that fact that makes me a skeptic, rather than the other way around.
I suppose the same can be said about any product that has early adopters. Facebook wasn’t always as prevalent, however, because of a big push by early adopters and trendsetters it has grown.
Google is going to shout down their unpopular services/product.So, they merge lots of features in a new product and produce new product like Google+.
That’s what they seem to be doing.
It’s a great promotional tool as long as your demographic is male/techy/nerds
Haha those are definitely who the early adopters are!
Enjoyed your article please add me as a friend on Google+.
Sure thing Gerry, what’s your email?

Yes, there are indeed a great many social networking sites out there, but frankly, this is the time to join Google Plus, not when it gets more popular (and it will), but now! The sooner folks, the better.
Great advice Angel, I agree it’s great to be an early adopter

Sure Thing, Stefanos!
I’m sorry but am I the only one that see’s Google+ as waste of my time? Normally I knock all forms of Social media, and this post wont change my mind about Google+. I think there are better ways to engage your customers, its more important now, than ever to think outside the box of online marketing.
It is possibly a waste of your time if you aren’t building and engaging your community. People were knocking facebook when it first came out. The early adopters prevailed though! Thanks for your input.
Sorry to see the pic of Mike Arrington, not a fan. Redditor for life.
http://www.ismikearringtonadick.com/#othernews
Sorry you feel that way, I personally don’t hate or love anyone. It was just a random picture I chose.
I never said I hated him, I just don’t agree with his point of view on most topics.
I just believe his opinion is overvalued in the web community.
I feel the same way, loving or hating someone is too much of a waste of time, there are better things to do in life. Like post on this blog!
google plus really nice it will have plenty members then facebook in feature
Yeah, lets hope so Raja
Promoting google+ votes is becoming a very hot business. Using these types of services could have negative or positive affects on SEO.
We just have to see how google treats them. Another place to buy google plus votes is bulkones.com
Will be interesting to see how this evolves over the next few months.
Definitely, it really is a hot topic in the community. We’ll have to see how it pans out !
Buying +1′s has become a lucrative business. It all started with buying traffic, then buying Facebook likes and now it is Google +1′s. I’m not sure how much weight-age Google is giving for its +1 on each websites but they will soon take notice of selling +1′s and shut its way.
Yeah, buying plus ones is a very unethical thing to do. I don’t suggest anyone do it.
Hi, we’re looking to use/explore google+, but don’t have an invite … yet. If you’re still inviting people, we’d love one! Thanks!
Sure, what is your email? Would love to add you.
Enjoyed your article. My email address is a Google Apps address; should work for Google +. Would appreciate an invitation. Thank you.

Time will tell, time will tell..
good , is it true that google will depend on google plus big time from now on ? i keep reading about this in a lot of blogs
It is most likely in the cards if Google Plus keeps growing at this rate !
sarahgrimmauthor@gmail.com
Thanks Sarah
I am using the new Google plus and am following you. Great platform but still a long way to go to come near to FB
Definitely, thanks for the follow
I have also started using G+. I am not familiar with it and trying to adopt it.
It is pretty easy to use functionally speaking.
Another great article on Google plus, you are a genius in the arena of seo
I am really grateful to be a reader here
Glad you find the content helpful, thanks for the kind words
Please send a G+ invite – lindkold at gmail

You sold me on Google +…I would appreciate an invite…thanx
I wonder about your short explanation and use of google plus. After read your article people never miss to sing in with google social network
You should try it out. Thus far I am finding G+ extremely easy to use.
Hi Neil!
Great post! Please invite me to your circle.
E-mail: soyangur@gmail.com
Thanks,
Sandro
Sandro, I would be happy to. Thanks for reading
Your site rocks. Awesome info. Could I please get an invite? Email is jeffhcjan@gmail.com
Definitely Jeff, thanks for reading the article!
I really appreciate the information you provided in this post, but I’m getting so frustrated by all the blog traffic regarding how important it is to join Google+ — apparently I CAN’T! I’ve had a gmail address for several years, but any time I try to find out more about Google+ I just get a message that says it’s in limited trial and I can’t join! Aargh.
lauramctx at gmail
I will try to add you Laura, shouldn’t be a problem
Just a quick note, you need a google account and an invite, but not necessarily a gmail account. My google account is tied to my ancient hotmail email (because it’s the one everyone knows).
Thanks for the heads up Kit
Would appreciate an invite, thanks
philipjarvisbsc at gmail.com
Will do, thanks for reading Phil
Invite would be appreciated, cheers fella.
Thanks Dave, sure thing!
Great site. Not sure why it took me so long to find it. Has lots of the information I was looking for. Going to try some of the stuff in this article. Mind sending me an invite?
howtokeg@gmail.com
Will do, Thanks Eric
Terrific post, Neil! I’m giving a business report next month on this very topic, and you’ve given me some great ideas to incorporate. Thanks! An invite would be most appreciated! prairiedaug@gmail.com
Definitely, good luck Stephen
I think Google is really getting it right now after failing on Google buzz before to topple Facebook’s domination. But of course, we won’t see that anytime soon, since Facebook is still strong with its 750 million users.
Yeah, it will take some time. However, the adoption rates are phenomenal!
Please invite me.
What is your email Amit ?
Thanks Neil, for the great info on this site. Like some of other comments, I tried to register with G+ and they kept saying capacity is maxed out. Does an invite help? I’ll try again once I have your invite.
Another question: I have an gmail email (unhique at gmail dot com), but I created a website & use it with google email service (nhi at unhique dot com). I prefer my email @ my own domain. Which one will work with G+?
Thanks gain.
I will surely invite you. Please try it out and tell me how it works for you. You can definitely use your own email at your own domain at long as it is hosted by gmail.
Hi Neil,
I think my other email addresses are “Google app accounts”. I do have a Google account email, nhihainguyen at yahoo dot com. Thanks Neil
No not yet Neil. I haven’t received anything in my yahoo email account yet. My own domain is an app account and it can’t be used with google plus yet. Please invite me again. Thanks Neil.
Cool. Thanks Neil. How do I know if I got invited?
It should show up on the toolbar on the top. Let me know if you haven’t been invited yet.
Awesome article .. I would really love an invite please … signworxonline@gmail.com
Thank you!
Hi Neil,
I want to open an account with Google plus. Please send me an invite.
Thanks,
Bhawna
bhawnachandola12@gmail.com
Done! Just sent you an invite.
Enjoy Google plus
Hi Neil,
as ever, thanks for the great posts. I’ve probably picked up at least 1 useful idea from each of them.
I cut through to the Google+ one from your Big Marketing Ideas for Small Businesses post. Bit late on the bandwagon, but would you mind sending me an invite please? ssb780@gmail.com
Thanks!
No problem.
I agree, there are definitely some useful things you could take ideas from and apply to any business.
I hope you will use all you have learned to your benefit, also I will see to sending you an invite.
Good Luck to you.
Hi,
Please can you send us an invitation.
Thanks,
Y
If you are referring to an invitation to google+ then I will need your email address
Hi Neil
I was thinking facebook was good enough for me and I wasnt even trying twitter. Now I think google + has to be a good idea for my site
Please invite me
Facebook is a good start, however I would recommend getting into Twitter before Google +. In the long run you really want to be on all social sites. Also you no longer need an invite.
Please invite me to google plus. Also any other free ways to advertise my business on the internet. Thank you.
Google plus now available for everybody without inviting, simply go and register account for yourself.
Thanks for helping out with LW3′s question. Appreciate it.
No need, you can sign up on your own now.
I do not like G+ pages, they looks like bad copies of Facebook pages with no design, no ability to automate posting.
LOL, you are right they have a lot to still develop.
This is the first info I have found about Google +. When I look for Google + on a search engine all I get is info on Google and ad words. This is great. I am looking forward to working with the social media.
Google + has not yet reached the hight of Twitter or Facebook but is still a social site you should get into. It may grow to be of equal impact in the future.
Neil,
Do you think that videos are great for getting closer to your clients. a) they have a personal touch and show online clients that there is someone real behind the scene. b) The narrate more in less time and easy than reading a post which may take longer. I have never seen any of your videos, Why?
I haven’t created to many videos, but I will try and make one for my readers soon.
Hi Neil, I have just started google plus for my business. I don’t understand what to do now. When I try to sign in it wants my real name. Shouldn’t it be my business name? Also how do I get the google plus badge for my site. I found one and put it onto my site but when I click it, it just sends me to a sign up page with a picture of my business.
Recently when I post on my blog I will find the article’s SER shortly thereafter in Google. That’s very nice. But…
… it always says that I +1 the article which is not the case, just yet. When I cross check my Google+ account the article isn’t there.
Is that due to the author tag? Or due to Google custom search on my blog?
At first I was a bit skeptical about Google Plus, but I’ve just keep hearing good things about it and how effective it is! Haven’t created a page yet, but it’s something I need to do ASAP
But if there was a single important reason to use Google Plus, what would it be?
Thanks Neil, I appreciate the information. Would you invite me to Google+?
Neil,
Thanks for taking my call today. You are an amazing wealth of knowledge and I’m learning so much as I go through all of your posts. Continued success! Appreciate the Google+ invitation.
Thanks, Ed
Nice article. I just attended a google+ seminar and this fills in the blanks a bit.

Hello Neil…do you have some numbers about how many people are joined on Google+ by September 2012? It seems to me that the hype is slowing down, maybe even stalling…
Thanks for the step by step guide. It made a lot sense and easier to follow.
hey neil,
yeah you are right. i am convinced to join Google Plus. One must read this post.
Thanks.
Matt
