Great quotes, Neil; if you don’t mind, I may tweet a few of them. Here’s one of my favorites from Nietzsche (one of the most misunderstood philosophers who ever lived): “[B]elieve me: the secret for harvesting from existence the greatest fruitfulness and the greatest enjoyment is—to live dangerously. Build your cities on the slopes of Vesuvius! Send your ships into unchartered seas! Live at war with your peers and yourselves!” Cheers, @ScottEdWalker

Exactly! You only have one life to live, so enjoy it to the fullest. As a human being, we naturally have the ability to grow, it’s what keeps us moving forward. Why not accelerate the learning/taking action process to get what you want sooner… right?

Reply

catalin December 11, 2009 at 10:06 AM

Accelerate the process but not forget to still live your life. If we start thinking about money and start a business as soon as we get out of college we tend to miss some of the beautiful things in life. It’s like starting a family. You get married, you have children and after that everything that you do is for your children and you just skipped a part of life.

Reply

Neil Patel December 12, 2009 at 12:09 PM

It all depends on your motives Catalin… for many family, kids, etc. aren’t important. They would rather focus on building a successful future rather than living the “white picket fence” American dream

Reply

catalin December 14, 2009 at 8:28 AM

I don’t even think about starting a family if I know that I can not offer my children all what they need. I don’t see the point in getting married and having children if you can’t raise them properly and offer the the right education. It’s nonsense. I see lots of young couples who have kids and they don’t have money to feed them. That is cruelty from my point of view. Of course, this depends on the level of education they received.

Reply

Neil Patel December 14, 2009 at 5:58 PM

You’re right and more often than not, people are just ignorant and have yet to get exposure to what’s out there.

After talking to a guy about the book Founders at Work. He couldn’t figure out a common thread that defined them. Your first quote captures what I told him.

“The true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer.”

They all took the first step. Great Post. Great Blog. I’m going to start reading you.

It’s true that it all starts with a dream… but the reality is that almost everyone on the planet dreams in 1 way or another. The select few who make it happen actually take action.

Reply

Leo December 9, 2009 at 9:23 AM

Dreams and most of the times ideas are a commodity. A dime a dozen. It is all about execution, and taking the first step.

Of course, there’s obviously a lot of stuff to say about taking the first wrong step.

Matthew Krawse December 10, 2009 at 1:29 PM

Step 1. Dream
Step 2. Execute

It’s a two step process and most people don’t take the leap of faith to the second step.

In the words of Seth Godin “There’s no shortage of remarkable ideas, what’s missing is the will to execute them.”

Reply

Neil Patel December 10, 2009 at 9:17 PM

I like it… everyone can dream, but very few will actually take action.

Reply

catalin December 11, 2009 at 10:08 AM

Most people remain stuck on dreaming and that is why they fail in their life. Having the courage to take action is very important. You can dream for as long as you want but don’t forget to start acting at some point.

Reply

Neil Patel December 12, 2009 at 12:18 PM

Like I always say… everyone can dream, but very few people take action. That’s why most people in this world are next to broke!

Reply

catalin December 14, 2009 at 8:30 AM

The thing is that at this point every market is almost saturated. It’s hard to innovate anymore and this is why many people don’t dare to start a new business as they saw others failures already.

Reply

Neil Patel December 14, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Innovation isn’t necessary… you can always just duplicate what others are doing by trying to make it better.

Reply

catalin December 15, 2009 at 9:27 AM

But as I said, you have to innovate at some level for people to have a reason to choose you.

Reply

Matthew Krawse December 10, 2009 at 1:38 PM

Every failure gives you the opportunity to learn and grow. I believe you learn more from your failures than you do your successes.

Oddly enough, “failure” or “failing” is one of the most common fears among people… it’s right up there with heights, spiders, and public speaking!

Reply

Neil Patel December 10, 2009 at 9:19 PM

People fear failing because they feel embarrassed… failure is actually just a sign of taking action. It’s also something that help bring you 1 step closer to success.

The first is from my father, Glen Myers: “It will all work out in the end – it’s just a matter of WHOSE!”

The second one is from Archie Bunker from the TV show, All in the Family: “Next time you get a kindly impulse Edith, stifle it!”

Sometimes you just have to use humor to get back on track!

Hi Neil ,
Indeed , those are extremely motivational Quotes .
I just have a suggestion , next time when you have so many points in a single article , try breaking it up into Part 1 & Part 2 .
Because , people generally have the tendency to start reading from the begining & then if it is too long , they either skip the middle ones or the last ones :-)

Regards
Girija

Hmmm, that’s very valid for an article like this … thanks. These should be broken down in some type of categorical segments.

Hi,
Neil Patel, your every step is really useful for motivation. I have read few of your articles but this post is really informative. According to me there’s not a business anywhere that is without problems. Business is complicated and imperfect. Every business everywhere is staffed with imperfect human beings and exists by providing a product.

You missed one.

“Keep it simple, stupid.”

Don’t over complicate things and you’ll have more free time and cash in the bank. :)

Out of the list you posted I really enjoyed the one about “buses” by Richard Branson and about competitors by … Henry Ford.

Hey Neil,

My favorite quote: Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. – Vince Lombardi

Kind of says it all about my perspective on business, I’m sure you would agree.

Sincerely,
Jay Jalodomisa

Reply

Exactly Jay… you can’t just win once and then your done… you need to keep pushing till the very end. If you can do it over and over again, you’ll begin to naturally attract it.

Unfortunately this is very true: #36: Well, you know, I was a human being before I became a businessman. – George Soros

Money change people in most unexpected ways.

Reply

It does… and hopefully when it does, you’re able to change for the better. Just be conscious about your decisions and don’t let your ego or pride get in the way.

#50: You can fool all the people all the time if the advertising is right and the budget is big enough. – Joseph E. Levine

Again, this is wrong. People will eventually find out that you lied to them and you will loose them as customers at some point.

#90: If you work just for money, you’ll never make it, but if you love what you’re doing and you always put the customer first, success will be yours. – Ray Kroc

This is very true. Not doing something that you like will get you to the point when you will get bored and start to hate what you are doing and this is not productive.

Reply

Neil Patel December 15, 2009 at 6:08 PM

When it comes to advertising, it’s way too easy to be deceitful when you have the mega bucks… (not saying it’s a good idea…)

#90 is powerful… it’s a way to give yourself natural motivation.

He doesnt want to audit the federal reserve bank. What does that mean? That means he has invested in these corrupt banks thats why he is so rich. He has insider knowledge about these banks, so he invested as such and made more money then he would have actually made.

He is in simple terms a fraud. Robert Kiyoaski now that is a business man
