Actually most of the people does something for the others to feel better. I think it’s our human nature and we can’t help it so we shouldn’t worry about it. The act of helping is what counts after all. And as for the people who help because they have something to gain it may be worse but as long as both sides are happy I’d say it’s ok.

Even if someone doesn’t follow/believe Buddhism in the mystical sense, I think it stands to reason that Karma works in general (but obviously not guaranteed). It is a good practice to live by.

I agree that making sure you are happy, whether you’re being selfish or not, is beneficial to those around you. The happier you are, the more you are able to give.

Christina Comaford-Lynch actually wrote a big section in her new book about this exact thing… how helping others can actually benefit you even more. It’s a great book, definitely worth a read. Agreed. There’s no guarantee they would have hired me but at least they solicited me so I had a fighting chance.

If I had gone to them directly, I believe, it would have been the “bit bucket” for my resume.

I have to agree with you about the positive benefits of sharing with others. Last year, I started a UNIX HOWTO blog and Google noticed it. They had one of their technical recruiters contact me and she queried me about the possibility of working at Mountain View. I talked to her for about a month regarding the possibility. But at the end of the day, I was content with my current employer and situation. However, she said if I decided to return to the states, give her a buzz. But you’re right, sharing definitely opens the door for networking opportunities.

Building relationships at personal level with as many people as possible is what you emphasize and what i believe works best when it comes to personal branding.

Helping others does add to create respect in their eyes for us and what i notice is that, when we help someone, it creates a positive respectful attitude in his mind, and probably thats pay back quickly. Somewhere that person will certainly praise us infront of other people he talks with, among his school friends, mentioning our names on some forums etc. all adding to our own popularity.

Even the Dalai Lama agrees with you on this one, sharing that it’s better to help people driven by the belief that karma will bring that good energy back your way than to not help at all, since the net effect is more kindness in the world.
